One week to go

After last minute delays, a flurry of defects and many, many glasses of wine, it’s finally ‘moving in’ week. So it’s all hands to the pump as we bend over backwards to make sure the cat doesn’t notice anything unusual… It’ll all be ok. Right?

A lot has been crammed into the last few weeks, not least the arrival of our very orange front door. You certainly won’t miss it in the dark.

The living area is coming along nicely, with the exception of a large hole where the shelf should be. The kitchen team are heading to site this week to spend two days putting her up and adding the finishing touches to the kitchen, including orange doors and overhead cabinet. The fire went in, then came straight back out again when we discovered it was in the wrong spot. Such are the joys of building!

Totally infatuated with the orange grout in the bathrooms. One of those decisions you make in haste and love at leisure. We were a little worried we’d played it a bit safe in these rooms, but the tiles add just the right little splash of ‘odd’.

Lots of excitement in the master bedroom, from funky fans, to moonlit skylights and Rachel’s wardrobe (no current plans to share). Unpacking has already begun and no, there is not enough shoe storage. But no one ever really thought there would be.

Best part of the last few weeks? Our first ever rural post box! And before you ask, the numbers are supposed to be wonky… who wants to be normal?

  1. Hi Rachel,
We absolutely love your house, its just beautiful.
We are 18 months into the journey and 3 years from living it !!!!!
Still it has been fun starting to look at what we like and don’t and some might say its nice to have the time, hmmmm not sure I agree, but due to jobs in Christchurch we have to wait!!!!.
We have brought a section on the west coast in Hokitika it has the most amazing views, the down side of things are, it is an unusual shape and to get the most out of the views of the ocean and alps we have to orientate the house towards the south west and as light is a big thing for us we are thinking hard at our options, it is also in a high wind and quite exposed position.
We have never built before and are after as many tips as poss.
Did you design your home with the covered back for weather conditions or just because you liked the idea? I think its great. Is your property exposed to higher than normal winds or rain? and what is the orientation for the sun and light.
I hope you don’t mind me asking you a few questions, I`m not even sure you look at your replies anymore, but here’s hoping.
    Thanks so much
    Kind regards

    1. Hi Janene,

My goodness, is this the latest reply in the history of replies? Probably! So sorry to have missed this at the time. We’ve been neck deep in house, life etc, much like everyone. By now you’re probably built and away so hope it is all going well! If you need any tips on windbreak planting shout out. Sorry again for missing it!
