Another job we outsourced to Brix and what a result. The 25 metres of planter boxes span the entire front of the house and really finish this aspect off. The team moved on to the boxes after completing the retaining wall and we couldn’t be any happier with them.

Filling them was a little trickier, but turns out you can achieve a lot in one weekend when you put your mind to it. A dawn start on Saturday morning saw us head up to Auckland to see the awesome team at Farrells to pick up as many plants as we could fit into the Roadmaster. After dropping everything off and doing a quick car swap, it was off to Carine to grab a trailer load of gravel to act as drainage for the bottom of the retaining wall. If you’ve ever wondered how much fun it is to shovel gravel, it isn’t.
First thing Sunday morning we headed back to Carine to pick up some top soil for the boxes, ending up doing four trailer loads in total. You get into a routine after a while. Then you get very cross at the shovel. Then you cry a bit and start wailing about needing a beer.
Last job of the day was to actually get the plants into the soil. Mercifully, top soil is very easy to work with so everything was in without too much fuss. As with the house itself, we’re trying to keep the mid century feel going outside with plenty of flaxes and grasses. Now we just need to keep it all alive.
